Docsis

Docsis stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification. It is a standard for cable modems or supported equipment, the standard was developed by CableLabs and with certification from CableLabs, manufacturers (ie; Motorola) will be able to produce cable modems for retail, meaning consumers (you!) no longer have to lease the cable modem off the ISP (unless the ISP don't allow this of course).

Basically Docsis is just a standard for manufacturers to stick too so their products will work correctly with any standard cable tv network.
