Traceroute

A traceroute is a utility that traces a packet from your host to a remote host, showing how many hops (routes) the packet needs to take to reach the remote host and how long each hop takes. If you visit a website on the internet and it is loading up slowly then you could perform a traceroute to figure out where along the route is going wrong.

How do I perform a traceroute?
Its fairly simple, if you are running win 95/98 or ME then go to start --> Run and type command , if you are running win NT/2000 or XP then type cmd . Once you are in command prompt type tracert <remote host> , for example tracert www.webmonky.co.uk .

Here is an example of what a traceroute will look like:

C:\Documents and Settings\Nick Jones>tracert www.gradwell.net
